A purpose-built pontoon for the Papua New Guinea Defence Force, fabricated locally for demanding marine conditions.
Steel Industries recently completed the fabrication of a new pontoon for the Papua New Guinea Defence Force, in collaboration with the Commonwealth of Australia.
Replacing a heavily deteriorated existing structure (below), the new pontoon measures just over 7 metres long and 3.4 metres wide, with a finished weight of more than 6 tonnes.
The project incorporated purpose-built steel flotation units, structural steelwork and grating, requiring a high level of technical fabrication proficiency throughout. The flotation units were fabricated from 8mm steel plate, while the completed structure was finished with a specialist marine-grade coating system to provide added durability and corrosion protection.
The result is a robust, purpose-built marine structure designed for the conditions it will face in service, and a strong example of Steel Industries’ ability to deliver complex fabrication projects locally.
